Storage is pleased to participate in Art Basel Miami Beach with a solo presentation of works by Pat Lasch (b. 1944, New York).

Pat Lasch (b, 1944, New York) is an American conceptual artist, sculptor, and painter whose practice is rooted in personal narrative and embodied labor. Emerging in the 1970s from the downtown New York art scene, she was an early member of A.I.R. Gallery, one of the first women‑run artist collectives.

The daughter of a German pastry chef and a seamstress, she translated the techniques learned in her family’s kitchen and workshop into sculptural forms. Her meticulously sewn tondos—concentric stitched circles on unprimed muslin—trace twenty generations, with each tiny stitch representing an individual life. The circular forms function as both genealogical maps and meditations on the cyclical nature of life, visualizing how countless ancestors shape a single identity.

In the mid 1970s, Lasch expanded into three dimensions, creating delicate “pastry tube” sculptures with acrylic paint piped like icing on a cake. These works reference celebrations, rituals, and the passage of time, including birthdays, weddings, and other rites of passage, while bringing up tensions between sweetness and decay, pleasure and loss. Her miniature cake sculptures and life-size ceremonial and wedding dresses, crafted from acrylic, glass beads, baroque pearls, and metallic pigments, blur the boundaries between decorative art and fine sculpture, elevating materials traditionally associated with feminine labor.

Her work is deeply autobiographical, reflecting desire, spirituality, mourning, and the body’s passage through time. Lasch has addressed intimate aspects of women’s experience—including miscarriage and abortion—through works that encode these histories within dresses and sculptural forms.

Over her career, Lasch has worked across media—plaster, bronze, mixed media, porcelain, and printed materials—producing figurative sculpture, emotionally resonant bronzes, and enigmatic works that explore life’s paradoxes. Her work is included in major collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art, and has been the subject of monographic exhibitions such as Journeys of the Heart, which surveyed over four decades of her practice.

Lasch occupies a rare space where craft and conceptual art converge, honoring the labor of women’s histories while interrogating institutional exclusion and the cultural invisibility of domestic work. Through labor-intensive processes and deeply personal imagery, her art illuminates the intersections of gender, identity, memory, spirituality, and materiality, situating women’s labor, creativity, and resilience at the center of contemporary artistic discourse.
